grizzly new details on the los angeles airport shooting. the shooter fired at point blank range at tsa officer hernandez who crumbled to the floor. the suspect walked away, turned around, and saw hernandez squirming on the floor. the suspect came back, shooting hernandez again, killing him. five people were shooting with including the suspected gunman, paul ciancia who is in critical condition. two others were treated at hospitals and released. 29-year-old high school teacher is in fair condition. he was shot in the leg. now to cnn stephanie elim outside l.a.x. stephanie, you spoke with a passenger who witnessed a shooting. >> reporter: don, it was crazy to hear his story. he said everyone hit the ground. he was up above the escalator, in he curity, wh when everything happened. there was a pause and he looked back down and that's when he saw everything else. take a listen. >> we were at security. we heard the initial gunshots. and everybody in security hit the ground. a lot of folks were scrambling forward. so there was a pause. i look down the escalator and i saw the gunman. he had hi

shot one tsa officer and wounded several others. the airport is open again and details tonight emerging. we have more from the airport and chris lawrence outside the suspect's home in new jersey. we'll begin, what do we know about what happened today? >> reporter: passengers say it was a normal day at the airport when suddenly they heard very, very loud popping, one man said it sound the like it must have been from a large gun. many saw spark s and started running. there was the beat of calm and then absolute chaos, sheer terror as people were trying to flee this terminal. what happened afterwards is that after this gunman was taken down by the police, passengers here were completely stuck and it was gridlock. you can see, piers, there is still people walking up and down the streets trying to figure out how to get to the next destination. >> and in terms of actually what he did, we now know she shot dead one tsa officer. we think he wounded a second tsa officer, a third person was also wounded. we believe and others may have suffered minor injuries in the stampede to get away. is that t

before the airport returns to normal after friday's shooting that left a tsa officer dead and others wounded. nbc's miguel almaguer has been covering the story for us over the last day. good day to you, miguel, and what's the latest? >> reporter: good afternoon. we know that terminal three where the investigation is taking place where the shooting happens remains shut down to the public. they are allowing some passengers who were inside that terminal during the shooting to come back this afternoon to retrieve some of their personal belongings. as you know, this shooting took place yesterday at 9:30 in the morning. it was the middle of the weekday commute at the end of the week when police say 22-year-old paul ciancia walked through the front doors of the terminal, pulled out an assault rifle from a bag and opened fire, first hitting tsa agents. they say it appears he was targeting tsa agents, killing one before moving on through the terminal, past security. about 100 yards deep into the terminal where police engaged him in gunfire. officers tell us he was shot multiple times, then ta

. overnight l.a.x. paying tribute to the fallen tsa agent lighting the 100 foot pylons blue in his honor. he shot 39-year-old gerardo hernandez at point blank range, left, came back because he saw him moving to shoot him again. hernandez leaves behind two kids and his grieving wife speaking out. >> he was always excited to go to work and enjoyed the interaction with the passengers at l.a.x. he took pride in his duty for the american public and the tsa mission. >> that's what folks said, always smiling. two other tsa agents injured in friday's shooting. they are now home recovering. >>> overnight a shooting on homecoming weekend at a college in north carolina. police say somebody was firing off a gun near a dorm on the campus of north carolina a&t university in greengs bosboro. the university was put on lockdown while they are looking for the shooter. the lockdown is over. luckily, the student that was shot is going to be okay. >>> this story, nothing short of a miracle. a group of eight sky divers and two pilots very lucky to be alive. i mean, shocking story after the two planes that they we
indicated his anger and his malice, i would say, toward the tsa officers. >> reporter: according to a federal criminal complaint, ciancia fired multiple rounds at point blank range at officer gerardo hernandez. investigators said ciancia proceeded up an escalator, but when hernandez appeared to move, he returned to shoot him again. police say he shoots tony grigsby and brian ludmer. once he was past security, police say he made his way down the long corridor. according to some reports, he went up to witnesses and said tsa. they shook their heads no and he kept going. ciancia was seen shooting several times. we now know ciancia lived in los angeles for over a year. law enforcement sources tell nbc news he legally purchased two gun from a target range not far from his home. in a moment, ciancia lashes out at the tsa saying his constitutional rights were violated and a mention of nwo which warns of a totalitarian one-world government. he sent a message to his family back in new jersey just before the rampage. his father was so worried, he asked to call l.a. authorities. >> he called

pulled out a rifle, they say, from a bag, then began to open fire. he may have been targeting tsa agents according to many witnesses. he then was able to breach security, made it about 100 yards into the terminal where he was engaged with police in another gun battle. he was wounded and taken into custody but not before he killed a tsa agent as well as injuring several others. many folks were pouring out of the airport during all of this. passengers were running onto the tarmac. some were cowering inside restrooms, doing what they could to escape the shooter. here's what one witness told us. >> reporter: >> the shooter came down the corridor, past the security area, and he continue fronted me and looked at me and said, keena se? a question mark in his eyes. i shook my head and he kept going. >> reporter: with one dead and several other wounded the suspect is in custody now. investigators are still looking into the motive. terminal three, where this shooting happened, remains shut down, although other terminals are still active. you can hear this plane landing behind me. an active runway
